*1697 - Massachusetts General Court passes a resolution to study the possibility of a canal between Massachusetts bay and Buzzards Bay.
This is the first major public works project in the "New World."

| *1776 - First canal survey is ordered by the Massachusetts General Court, Thomas Machin is retained as engineer.
The cost is estimated to be about £3000. |
| *1824 January 5 - Sen. James Lloyd of Massachusetts introduces a resolution to the U.S. Senate to survey for a canal large enough for war ships to pass. Later that year, the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers details several optional routes for a canal. |
| *1880 September 15 - 112 Non-English speaking Italians (later joined by 300 to 400 more) from New York began work on a canal with only picks, shovels and wheelbarrows, the work lasted less than 2 months. The workers were never paid. |
| *1909 June 22 - The Cape Cod Construction Company, under August Perry Belmont officially begins construction at 1:20 PM with a ceremonial shovel full of earth. |
*1914 July 29, - Belmont's Cape Cod Canal opens. First ship through was the "Rose Standish," rented from the Nantasket Beach Steamboat Company. The canal is a financial failure and almost ruins the wealth of the Belmont family. |
| *1928 March 31, 12:00PM - U.S. Army Corps of Engineers takes over the Cape Cod Canal. Uncle Sam purchases the Canal for $11,400,000. |
| *1935 - U.S. Army Corps of Engineers begins work on canal improvements. The canal remains open for most of the time during the work. |

*1940 June - U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completes improvements at for a total cost of $19,600,000.
